About the firm

Law with perspective.Advice with purpose.

VW Associates advises businesses, institutions and individuals on complex legal, transactional and regulatory matters across India.

Who we are

A firm built around judgement.

VW Associates is an Indian law firm advising businesses, institutions and individuals on complex legal, transactional and regulatory matters. We work across corporate, commercial, disputes and regulatory practice, bringing together lawyers whose experience spans boardroom negotiations, courtrooms and regulators' offices.

Our approach begins with commercial context. Before advising on structure or strategy, we take the time to understand the objective behind a mandate, the constraints a client is working within and the risks that genuinely matter. That understanding allows us to give advice that is precise, practical and capable of being acted upon.

Every mandate is partner-led. Clients deal directly with the lawyers responsible for their matter, supported by cross-disciplinary teams assembled around the question at hand. We combine an understanding of Indian statutory and regulatory practice with the ability to work alongside international counsel on cross-border mandates.

We act for Indian and international businesses, financial institutions, promoter families and individuals. The firm works from its head office in Mumbai, advising clients across India, and collaborates with international counsel where a mandate has cross-border elements.

Our approach

How we work on a mandate.

01

Understand the objective first

We begin by establishing what a client is trying to achieve, the constraints they are working within and the consequences they are most concerned to avoid. Advice that ignores any of the three tends to be technically correct and practically unusable.

02

Advise on the route, not only the rule

Identifying the applicable law is the beginning of the analysis. We advise on sequence, timing, negotiating position and what a counterparty or regulator is likely to do in response.

03

Report by consequence

Findings are reported by reference to what they mean: whether a point affects price, timetable, risk allocation or nothing at all. Clients should not have to translate a list of observations into a decision.

04

Say what we do not know

Where a position is genuinely unsettled, we say so and set out the range. Confidence that is not supported by the material is of no use to anyone making a decision.

What clients can expect

Consistency in how we engage.

  1. 01

    Strategic thinking

We begin with the objective behind a mandate rather than the document in front of us, and advise on the route most likely to reach it.

  2. 02

    Partner-led advice

Clients work directly with the partner responsible for the matter. Delegation happens within the team, not away from the client relationship.

  3. 03

    Commercial understanding

Advice accounts for cost, timetable and management attention, because these usually determine whether a legally sound course of action is a sensible one.

  4. 04

    Cross-disciplinary expertise

Corporate, tax, regulatory, employment and disputes lawyers work on a single position rather than issuing separate views that a client must reconcile.

  5. 05

    Responsiveness

We agree how and when we will communicate at the outset of a mandate, and we tell clients promptly when a position changes.

  6. 06

    Indian market knowledge

We combine an understanding of statutory practice and regulatory expectation across Indian jurisdictions with the ability to work alongside international counsel.
